Get over yourself.
It’s the same when people are all “but now it’s going to be mainstream and it’s going to be ruined”. It’s petty and childish and surely if you loved Les Mis that much you wouldn’t care about little things like who’s playing who, because the actors have obviously been chose for a reason. It’s going to be great, and even the people bitching about the superiority of the live version should recognize that it’s a movie, of course the live performances are going to be better, live performances nearly always are, what else would you expect? But this will be good for the theater, which is currently struggling. It’s going to raise public awareness of the theater, make it more accessible and hopefully bring other people into the theater world. And the west end actor’s are also in it, albeit smaller roles in some cases, so you can’t say all the actors in it are not up to the same standards a live performance would be (Colm Wilkinson and Samantha Barks). I’m not saying you have to go, but have some respect the actors that have clearly worked hard on it, and for the show that Mackintosh himself has produced, he’s not exactly going to let his longest running show be bastardised really. No it won’t be the same as a live performance, but you all knew it would be a movie when it was first announced. Of course it is going to be different, but it may surprise you. Don’t just boycott it out of pretentious dislike, or because an actor you don’t like is playing a main part. Watch before you judge, and remember that at the end of the day, it’s just a film and there is no need to get so bitchy over it.

I agree with this.

I have always said that I take acting over voice every day of the week when it comes to musical theatre. I’m not overly fond of Anne Hathaway’s voice, but ultimately, this is a story that is being told. If this was a straight concert with a woman in a fancy dress expected to belt out I Dreamed a Dream in front of some concert hall, then sure, get someone else to do it. But this is about storytelling; and in this moment, Fantine has sold literally everything there possibly is to sell (her possessions, her hair, her front teeth, her body) all so she can keep her daughter alive. So no, the song isn’t going to have the same power and punch of some Broadway and West End greats. But she is doing the character justice in that moment, and that’s what should matter.

I’m most anxious to hear Russell Crowe. He’s a tremendous actor, but his role is so different from Fantine’s. There’s no way around those big, powerful ballads for Javert. But again, we haven’t even seen the film yet. All judgement should be reserved for opening night.

I didn’t want to get my hopes up for this film, but damn. DAMN. It looks like it’s going to be so epic. Everyone looks marvelous. And HUGH. He’s going to be perfect…I just wish we got to hear him sing something in the trailer…and seen some of Aaron. But Samantha in the rain….and then Eddie spying Amanda….I’m still annoyed that they’re having Fantine sing “I Dreamed a Dream” after she sells her hair and becomes a prostitute, but I’ve already said my piece on that. I’m so thrilled they’re going to be singing live.

God, I’m so excited for that movie.
